Binary installation of gedit is best provided by your distribution via up2date, apt, cooker or whatever automated means you use to updated your software. Ximian is a well known provider of GNOME products across a wide range of distributions and provide several services to keep your GNOME and gedit updated.

The very latest versions of gedit are available only as source tarballs and can be found through the GNOME FTP Mirrors page. Ancient versions (1.120.0 and earlier) can also be found at the SourceForge gedit project page, although we really don't recommend using anything prior to 2.0 since the GNOME 2 architecture is now availble on many distributions.
